Sustainable fisheries management

Sustainable Fishing

As the holder of fishing rights at Lake Edersee, the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park is responsible for the management of the lake.

To assess the health and species composition of the fish, regular water analyses have been conducted since 2003. This valuable data allows us to react to changing conditions and, for example, adjust fishing methods or catch limits to the fish population.

Benefits of sustainable fisheries management

  • By the Refrain from stocking fish, i.e. avoiding the additional use of fish from farms, the risk of introducing alien or diseased fish can be minimized. Stocked fish usually show a low tolerance for unfavorable conditions and have difficulty compensating for them.

  • With regard to advancing global warming, fish that have adapted to the existing water system over the years have one lower morbidity and mortality rates .

  • The fish living in the Edersee feed exclusively on naturally occurring food resources and are considered Food fish particularly high quality.

Short & sweet

The research results of recent years show:

  • The total number of fish is subject to only minor fluctuations. The species composition, however, changes significantly.

  • The catfish species has increased significantly in recent years and is represented in all age groups.

  • The population of the fish species Aland and Asp has been increasing continuously in recent years. For this reason, the bleak fish species has declined sharply.

  • The rare fish species burbot (Red List species) has been multiplying continuously since the management change in 2005 and represents the largest population in Hesse on the Edersee.

  • The proportion of predatory fish is around 40% and therefore represents a good value - the aim is for a value of over 30%.

The fish stock surveys are carried out by IG Edersee eV on behalf of the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park.

The results provide information on the health and condition of the fish and the water body. Based on this, further measures can be taken to ensure sustainable management.
