National Park Kellerwald-Edersee

Pure wilderness in the national park with UNESCO World Heritage status

Hesse's only national park -
Here, nature and wilderness are allowed to develop undisturbed.

The Kellerwald-Edersee National Park is located in the middle of the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park.

The national park protects one of the last large beech forest stands in Central Europe, covering an area of 7.688 hectares. It was established in 2004 and expanded north of Lake Edersee in 2020. Since 2011, parts of the national park have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe".

The Kellerwald-Edersee National Park is an important partner for the nature park. Cooperation exists in areas such as hiking trail management (see below). quality region), in educational work (joint event calendar) and of course in the joint network of National park and nature park partners.

However, the two parks must be considered separately from an organizational and economic perspective. National parks are state institutions: The National Park Authority is subordinate to the Hessian Ministry for the Environment and, within its area of responsibility, also assumes tasks such as those of the lower nature conservation authority. The Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park, on the other hand, is a municipal association financed by levies from its member municipalities and by subsidies.
